On a par-4 the target is to do:
- a good Tee shot,
- then having a second long shot on the green (GIR)
- 2 putts in a comfortable condition.

If your tee shot is on the target and gives you a comfortable 2nd shot, then you can rate it at 2.
Then, if the 2nd shot lands on the green and gives you 2 easy putt, you can again rate the shot as 2.
Finally, if you make the par with 2 putts without stress, you can again rate the putting area as 2.
In total, you will score 6 points on the 3 area of golf which is the normal and good outcome.1
6 points for 6 target = 6/6 = 1
Another example
Let’s have a very bad second shot on the same hole !
The Tee shot is perfect on the fairway, you’re in good position to get the green in GIR but unfortunatly your second shot is a hook on the water.

So the rate of the second shot will be -2 ! Then you hit your ball (40 yards, 36 meters) from the dropping zone and land on the green, the flag is on another area and 2 putts is not given, so the rate for that short game is 1. You finally got your 2 putts with a very good first putt. The rate will be 2.
To summarize,
- tee shot = 2
- long shot is –2
- short game is 1
- two putts is the best you could do so 2
On this hole you got 3 points for 4 areas of game. So rate of this hole would be 3/8 which is not a good score.
3 points for 8 target = 3/8 = 0.38
